Manifesto
We are reaching a turning point.
The theaters are filled with bloated garbage, cartoons that cost 200 million dollars and struggle to make money even with $13 ticket prices and billion dollar world box office takes. That is not a good business model.
Meanwhile ’smaller’ films, quality adult dramas, thrillers, the stuff that used to win awards and be called the great movies can not even find distribution.
It has been proven again and again that star power can no longer open a movie by itself.
It has also been proven that the only thing that brings in box office is audience connection to emotional story telling.
The gap between the substance-less spectacles that fill the theater and any trace of quality story telling is growing and threatening to bring it all down.
The solution has been to throw more and more money at the problem, cast more and more stars, make any action scene a CGI filled cartoon with the more robots or comic book characters the better.
Do you realize that the greatest scripts, the greatest movies of all time WOULD NOT GET MADE today? And if they did, they would not find distribution.
Is there a place in today’s film market for ‘The Godfather’? Is there a place for ‘Silence of the Lambs’? Could ‘Chinatown’ get made today?
Think about it for a minute.
It is time to stop.
No stars.
No bullshit advertising campaigns that don’t deliver.
No more sequels, prequels, remakes and things based on comic books.
Is there an original thought left out there?
Is there anyone willing to take the smallest of risks and say, “I believe in this film!”
And that would be a small risk. The big risk is to continue down this path where the greatest products an industry has ever made COULD NOT BE MADE TODAY.
Less Money. More Story.
