I was disturbed to see the follwoing headline from /Film: The Hurt Locker Wins Best Picture from PGA; Is Avatar No Longer An Oscar Sure Thing?
Avatar has made lots of money is breaking Box Office records left and right. But I have not read one glowing review of it anywhere. The effects are amazing, mind-blowing, even game-changing, revolutionary. Say what you want. But please, someone point out a review anywhere that thinks this was a great story, a great script (WGA win notwithstanding , ugh). Great acting? Great dialogue? Anything? Anyone?
This is a direct quote from the article:
…while the Avatar box-office steamroller has made the film look like a lock for the Best Picture Oscar…
We all know that the Oscars are not traditionally the best films, but the best amongst the money makers. Or the one that has some strange populist acceptance of what was a great ‘Hollywood’ film. Sometimes they are political wins or make-up calls for past neglect, like Scorsese finally winning the director award for The Departed, instead of Goodfellas or Raging Bull.
But how does Box-office power equate to a shoe-in as not just an Oscar contender but a lock for the Best Picture when there are no reviews out there that would call this a great film?
I am not even saying it won’t or shouldn’t win. Even the Golden Globes just called it the Best Picture.
What I want to know is where is Michael Bay’s nomination for Transformers 2? Hurt Locker? Please. That film has only made $17 million worldwide. How is that even in consideration?
